Below is a table noting most recent submissions of my work to magazines and other markets. (Older submissions have been moved to this page.) It can be used to root for me and keep up with my career, as well as to calculate how much postage I'm spending on my gentle madness. The probability/hopefulness meter registers estimates only; if you happen to know better about the acceptance/rejection level on any of these markets, do let me know.

Also, if you are curious about what any of these stories is about, see the Synopses page.

date: story/essay, market

response time/notes

6/18/07: Folk-Tales of the Luquenorse, Fickle Muses Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium-Low Someone's gotta want this craziness...
6/18/07: The Heart of the Matter, From the Asylum Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium-High I believe in this story.
6/11/07: The Cemetery Ghouls' Book Club Finds a New Member, samizDADA Probability: Low; Hopefulness: High I'm not yet disillusioned about this story's chances.
6/9/07: World Without End, Ontario Review Probability: Very Low; Hopefulness: Medium Joyce Carol Oates' magazine. Last issue saw publication of poetry by John Updike, so I'm not holding my breath here.
6/9/07: "The Last Five Pounds", Woman's Day Probability: Low; Hopefulness: VERY VERY High They pay $2000, but the submissions guidelines disappeared from the site between the time I found out about this and the time the essay was ready.
6/1/07: The Cemetery Ghouls' Book Club Finds a New Member, Johnny America Probability: Low; Hopefulness: High
rejected 6/10. Ow. Owwwww.
This sounds weird, but I was waiting for that Uptown rejection just so I could submit this to Johnny America.
5/30/07: Words in the Air and Fear: A Cautionary Tale, Popular Ink Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium If they like it at all, I won't hear from them til November. Very interesting folks, though. Take a look.
5/29/07: "Choking the Joystick", Nerve.com (NSFW)* Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Low Long response time
5/24/07: "The Need in Her Eyes", Confessions: Fact or Fiction? Probability: Medium-Low; Hopefulness: Medium
rewrite requested 5/27; resubmitted 5/29
How I heard of this market is a convoluted story, not worth telling here.
5/24/07: And She Was in Love, Healing the Sea With Words Probability: Low; Hopefulness: High
acknowledged 5/25
This is a planned anthology for 2008. All submissions are posted on the website, whether or not they are accepted to the anthology, so you'll see my work there soon enough.
5/24/07: Ashes to Ashes, All Hallows Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium I don't know if this'll work at all. Ashes is an excerpt from Those Ghosts of Time, and All Hallows is a ghost-story magazine. If it doesn't get in, I doubt I'll submit it elsewhere; this was sort of a whim.
5/24/07: The Heart of the Matter, Pseudopod Probability: Low; Hopefulness: High
rewrite requested 6/15; declined. They wanted me to make the main character insane when I want him to be sane. Ah well.
This pub is such a neat idea that I hope it gets in. But I don't consider it a very read-aloud-able story.
5/22/07: Jane's Diary (revised), Aphrodite Unlaced (NSFW*) Probability: Medium; Hopefulness: Very High
accepted! 5/23. I'm pretty excited about this (royalties!), but I'm going to use a pseudonym.
More on this in Work-in-Progress.
5/22/07: Point of Weakness, Eclectica Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Low No comment
5/21/07: "THUMP-A", Switchback Probability: ?; Hopefulness: High No Duotrope stats on this mag.
5/21/07: "Won't Someone Stop Thinking of the Children?", Bleeding Quill Probability: Medium; Hopefulness: Medium I find I care less and less if my essays are accepted. I think it's because they keep getting accepted.
5/19/07: Things I Will Wish I'd Said to My Mother When She Dies / (Got to Get You) Out of My Mind, Noon Probability: ?; Hopefulness: Medium-High
rejected 6/16
More on this in Work-in-Progress.
5/18/07: Point of Weakness, Noneuclidean Cafe Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Low
rejected 5/18 with polite note.
Yeah, big surprise.
5/18/07: The Man Across the Hall, Hobart (web) Probability: Very Low; Hopefulness: Medium More on this in Work-in-Progress.

Is it Ducts or Ducts.org?
5/17/07: Query, Falling Leaves, Snowbooks Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Very High
query accepted! 5/17; full MS submitted 30 seconds later. I keep telling myself this means nothing, this means nothing...
Terrific small publisher in the UK. Visit them, read their blog, buy their books (despite how much it'll cost to ship). They're great.
5/15/07: Loss and Gain, Writer's Digest Writing Competition Probability: Very, Very Low; Hopefulness: Medium-High Getting back on the horse...
5/15/07: Point of Weakness, Bewildering Stories Probability: Medium; Hopefulness: Medium-Low
rewrite requested 5/16; declined.
I'M NOT REWRITING THIS STORY, DAMMIT.
5/15/07: Filial Love, JMWW Probability: Medium; Hopefulness: High Pretty good acceptance rate

rejected 5/18 with lovely note.
Classy mag with low acceptance rate
5/15/07: Jersey, The Rambler Probability: Medium-Low; Hopefulness: Very High I'm excited about this story.
5/1/07: R-P-L, Plain Spoke Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium No idea on response time
4/17/07: Point of Weakness, Kaleidotrope Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium-Low
rejected 5/11 with nice note.
I still don't know what's wrong with this story.

4/10/07: "Don't Chide the Homebody", Barrelhouse Probability: Medium-Low; Hopefulness: High

4/7/07: Query, "The Right Outfit", Mslexia Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium-High I'm worried my query will get lost in the shuffle.
3/16/07: The Heart of the Matter, Susurrus: The Literature of Madness Probability: Medium; Hopefulness: High
rejected 5/24. Ow ow ow.
I'm darned hopeful about this one. The story tickles me.
3/10/07: Fucked, Route "Born in the 1980's" Anthology Probability: No Idea; Hopefulness: High I was, in fact, born in the 80's, and I think my writing is better than that of most 18-to-27-year-olds, so I'm hopeful. Also it'd be nice to add "UK Anthology" to my publishing credits. But who knows how many submissions they'll get, or if there are prodigies in England beyond my ken?
3/9/07: Final Qualifier, GlassFire Magazine Probability: Medium; Hopefulness: Medium-High They print four issues a year and two pieces of fiction per issue. Not great odds, but we'll see.
3/7/07: Query, "Choking the Joystick", Clean Sheets (NSFW*) Probability: Medium-Low; Hopefulness: Medium-High
re-queried 4/11, as it's been 30+ days.
query accepted 4/12. Sent story.
re-queried 5/14, as it's been 30+ days since story was sent and 60+ days since query. Getting a little annoyed here.
As re-query didn't get any response, withdrew story 5/29, which garnered immediate response. Sigh.

3/7/07: Eleven Memories, Granta Probability: Very, Very Low; Hopefulness: High It's stupidly presumptuous of me to even send a story there.
3/6/07: Luquenorse Folktales, Mytholog Probability: Medium (?), Hopefulness: Medium-Low
confirmed submission 3/17
queried 5/4 and was told on 5/6 I'd have to be patient.
erroneous acceptance received 5/28 and decision summarily promised by 6/3. Found out that this mag no longer takes submissions longer than 1K, so automatic rejection may follow.
rejected 6/10. After all that, I wish they'd sent me something more than "your piece was not selected."
I am starting to doubt I'll place this one, so I'm kind of shrugging about it.
3/6/07: "Breaking the Audience's Bond", Slate Probability: Very Low; Hopefulness: Medium-High possibly none, they never wrote me back about "Graceland"
3/2/07: Fear: A Cautionary Tale, Cabinet des Fées Probability: Medium-Low; Hopefulness: Medium-Low
queried 5/1, as it has been two months, but Duotrope says they haven't responded to a story since 10/06 so I'm thinking about withdrawal.
1 month +
3/2/07: Eric/Spring '03, Memoir (and) Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Low
submission confirmed 4/3, leading me to believe that I won't get an answer until July.
Their first issue turned out to be very classy, so I've adjusted my probability/hopefulness meter.
2/27/07: Gross, The Quiet Feather Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium doesn't say; probably 3+ months
1/26/07: Over There, Confrontation Probability: Very Low; Hopefulness: Medium
queried 5/25, email bounced. I think they're still around, but their web presence is rather outdated.
3 months +. Very classy mag with excellent history.

12/23/06: World Without End, Kalliope Probability: Low; Hopefulness: Medium-High
confirmed submission? 3/20 by sending me a flyer about their next contest. WTF?

4-12 weeks
12/2/06: Morning Glory, Collective Publishing (NSFW*) Probability: Medium; Hopefulness: High

re-queried 4/17 to see if they're interested, or if I should try to place this elsewhere.
??
11/6/06: Loss and Gain, Glimmer Train Very Short Fiction Contest Probability: Low; Hopefulness: High
